Episode 53 - Day 9 of 30 Days To More Sales - Homepage Audit: Four Questions Your Website Must Answer Fast

Sep 19, 2026

The Ten-Second Test Our Homepage Couldn't Pass

I opened one of our own websites on my phone and tried to look at it like I had never seen the business before.

That sounds simple.

It wasn’t.

I knew what every product name meant. I knew which picture went with which use. I knew where the reviews were. I knew which product a new customer should try first.

So of course the website made sense to me.

Then I gave myself ten seconds.

No scrolling. No explaining. No filling in the missing pieces with everything I already knew.

The website looked good.

But that first screen couldn’t answer a few really important questions fast enough.

And that’s what we’re talking about in Day 9 of 30 Days to More Sales.

Because your website doesn’t have to be ugly, outdated, or broken to lose a customer.

Sometimes it looks beautiful.

It just doesn’t give her enough direction.

IN THIS EPISODE, YOU’LL HEAR:

  • Why knowing your own website too well can hide problems from you
  • What happened when I looked at one of our own sites like a brand-new customer
  • The four questions your first screen needs to answer quickly
  • Why your homepage doesn’t need to tell your entire company story
  • How your words, images, proof, and main button should work together
  • Why I want you to test your site on your phone, not just your computer
  • What can crowd the important message right off the screen
  • How to use the same test on Amazon, Walmart.com, TikTok Shop, and Etsy

YOUR ONE CLEAR NEXT STEP

Open the first screen your customer sees on your phone.

If you can, use a private browser window so you’re seeing something closer to what a new visitor sees.

Don’t scroll.

Give yourself ten seconds.

Then ask yourself whether a brand-new customer would know what she found, whether it’s for her, why she should keep looking, and what she should do next.

Don’t try to rebuild the whole website today.

Find the first answer that’s missing and start there.
